Our Re-refineries

Safety-Kleen operates eight re-refineries located across North America – including the world’s largest in East Chicago, Indiana. Safety-Kleen’s facilities produce approximately 150 million gallons of base oil annually. These plants have re-refined more than 4.1 billion gallons of used oil since their opening, enabling that used oil to have a second life as a high-quality lubricant. Our re-refineries have streamlined and optimized our refinery turnaround schedules, and standardized production at all our facilities, to ensure continuity of supply. With reduced downtimes and our API standardized base oil slate, we can supply base oils from any of our sites with no formulation changes or additional approvals needed. This minimizes the risk of supply disruptions to our customers’ businesses.

Safety-Kleen offers a wide variety of transportation solutions. Safety-Kleen works with all Class 1 railroads and can reach almost any rail-served location in North America. We own or lease over 530 rail cars to meet any customer’s rail needs. Furthermore, to provide even more bulk delivery options, we offer five barges ranging from 10,000 to 30,000 barrels. Finally, we provide a vast tanker/trailer network, drawing from the 17th largest private fleet in the country. 

Security of Refinery Feedstock

With our nationwide fleet of trucks, tankers, rail cars, barges and storage terminals, Safety-Kleen collects used oil from thousands of customer locations across the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Dispatched from 200+ service locations across North America, Safety-Kleen collects more than 240 million used oil gallons annually. As the largest used oil collector in North America, our network provides 100% of the used oil feedstock processed by our eight strategically located re-refineries. It is Safety-Kleen’s fully integrated business model that ensures the quality, reliability, and sustainability of KLEEN+.
